Professor Emeritus John Kabat Zinn
Professor John Kabat Zinn first developed mindfulness in the late 1970s as a treatment for the chronically ill. In doing so, he brought together elements of Buddhist tradition with Zen and Tibetan meditation techniques. His new Mindfulness system proved highly effective, and in the subsequent four decades it has grown to become the most popular programme for coping with the stresses and strains of modern living.
What is Mindfulness?
At its core, Mindfulness gives us ways to develop awareness, and live more fully in the present moment. It teaches us to refocus our thinking, to tune out past and future worries and to be fully present in the now, aware of where we are and what we are doing.
In doing so, we learn not to be overly reactive, or overwhelmed, by what is happening around us.
What are the benefits of Mindfulness?
Mindfulness improves overall well-being and helps to develop those attitudes that contribute to a satisfied life. It has been shown in clinical trials to have beneficial effects on both physical and mental wellbeing, and in relationship with ourselves and others.
It helps us to enjoy the pleasures of life as they occur, become fully engaged in our activities and develop a greater capacity for dealing with adverse events. Many people who practice mindfulness are less likely to get caught up in worries about the future or regrets from the past and are better at forming deep connections with others.
Mindfulness also improves physical health, helping to relieve stress, lower blood pressure, and improve sleep patterns.
This short, online course aims to offer participants an understanding of what Mindfulness is and acts as a starting point to developing your own mindfulness routine.
Elaine Crosbie has three decades’ experience working in adult education with community learning and development, health improvement and mental health training.
She is a qualified Scottish Mental Health First Aid trainer and her specialist area of work is developing and delivering mental health and wellbeing programmes.
